Shockwave Information

last updated 1/16/97

The following information should be considered accurate to Macintosh Computers only!

Netscape Navigator

In order to view Shockwave movies, you must have the Shockwave Director Plug-in installed. Shockwave movies should play correctly in Netscape Navigator 2.0 to 3.x and Internet Explorer 3.x. We have noticed memory problems with Netscape 3.0 and the extra memory burden of Shockwave may cause the screen to freeze (i.e crash) or in some cases when memory is low, the plug-in will fail to display some of the graphics in a movie (usually the background). The solution seems to be to give Netscape as much memory as possible. We also think that Photoshop 3.0.4 may have something to do with the memory problems. We have fewer problems when it is not running at the same time as Netscape. Use the latest Shockwave Plug-ins from Macromedia. Their installer will automatically locate your browsers and install the necessary files. You will need to allocate at least 8 to 12 megs of RAM to Netscape.

Note: Crashes used to occur when using the "M" button in Shockwave version of Dark Citadel (to return to Comics Page Menu. We have made changes to the shockwave file and this seems to be fixed.

The movie's file size is over 350 K and will take at least 2-3 minutes to load at 28.8 baud. However, after the initial load it will reload immediately from your cache during a given session.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 for the Macintosh

Internet Explorer 3.0 (released 11/4/96) will support Shockwave. Use Macromedia's installer which will automatically place the plug-ins in the correct folders and change IE's memory settings.

Macromedia has an abundance of useful information at their site to help you configure your system. Get the latest information or Shockwave Plug-ins from Macromedia.
